What Makes Motorcycle Crashes at Illinois Intersections So Serious?
Crashes involving motorcycles and turning vehicles are among the most dangerous types of collisions on Illinois roads. When a vehicle pulls out from a side street or driveway without enough time for a motorcyclist to stop or swerve, the impact is often direct and severe. Motorcyclists have no surrounding frame to absorb the force of a crash, which means injuries tend to be more serious than those suffered by occupants of enclosed vehicles.
Evening hours add to the risk, as changing light conditions can make it harder for drivers to spot approaching motorcycles. Route 14 in Barrington is a busy commercial corridor with multiple driveways and intersections, which creates frequent opportunities for the kind of gap judgment errors that lead to these crashes. Rider gear and helmets can reduce injury severity, but they cannot fully offset the physics of a direct collision.
