How Intersection Design Can Influence Crash Risk
Intersections are common crash locations because they bring together traffic from multiple directions. Turning movements, crossing paths, and varying speeds can all increase the chance of a collision, especially when drivers approach at the same time.
In smaller cities, intersections near public buildings or central areas may experience steady traffic throughout the day. Even early in the morning, limited visibility or reduced alertness can affect how drivers respond to signals or other vehicles.
Road layout, signage, and sightlines all influence how safely drivers can move through an intersection. When these elements are not clearly visible or when timing between vehicles is off, even a brief misjudgment can lead to a crash.
