What Challenges Arise in Hit-and-Run Investigations?
Hit-and-run crashes can be difficult to investigate because the involved driver leaves the scene before officers arrive. In many cases, investigators must rely on roadway evidence, surveillance footage, debris, and witness statements to identify the vehicle involved.
Nighttime crashes may create additional challenges due to lower visibility and fewer people nearby to see what happened. Damage left behind at the scene, such as broken vehicle parts or tire marks, can sometimes help narrow down the type of vehicle involved.
For investigation purposes, officers review nearby business cameras or traffic footage to trace where the vehicle traveled after the collision. Fatal hit-and-run incidents often require detailed scene reconstruction to better understand how the crash occurred and when the victim was struck.
