Bedford Township, MI (May 17, 2026) – A 48-year-old man was killed on Saturday night, May 16, following a motorcycle crash near the intersection of Secor Road and St. Anthony Road in Bedford Township.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 9:18 p.m. when a 68-year-old man from Temperance was driving northbound on Secor Road and turned west onto St. Anthony Road. As the truck entered the roadway, it was struck by an off-road motorcycle operated by Clayton J. Devol, also of Temperance.
Investigators said Devol was thrown from the motorcycle during the crash and landed near the east side of the road. The motorcycle later caught fire following the impact. Emergency units responded to the scene, but Devol was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the collision.
Authorities reported that Devol was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Officials also stated the off-road motorcycle was not equipped with a headlight or taillight. The driver of the truck was wearing a seat belt, and airbags deployed during the collision. He was not injured.
Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Devol.
What Factors Are Commonly Reviewed in Off-Road Motorcycle Fatal Crashes?
Crashes involving off-road motorcycles are often investigated by examining visibility, lighting equipment, and roadway conditions at the time of the collision. Vehicles without headlights or taillights can be difficult for other drivers to detect at night, especially on rural roads.
Investigators also review turning movements, speed, and rider positioning to determine how the impact occurred. Helmet use is commonly documented as part of the injury assessment process in motorcycle fatalities.
In cases where alcohol may be involved, authorities typically analyze driver behavior and other evidence gathered from the scene. These details help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
