Benson, MN (January 5, 2026) – A woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 29 in Benson, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. A 2018 Ford Escape, traveling eastbound on Hwy 9, collided with a 2008 Dodge Avenger that was southbound on Hwy 29. The vehicles crashed in the intersection under dry roadway conditions.
The driver of the Dodge, 30-year-old Tyler John Gastecki of Granite Falls, was reportedly uninjured and did not require transport to a hospital. The Ford Escape’s driver, 30-year-old Gage John Backman of Donnelly, was also uninjured but was evaluated at CentraCare Benson.
One passenger, 28-year-old Eva Marcelina Sinurat-Backman of Morris, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to CentraCare Benson for treatment. She had been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Airbags deployed in the Ford Escape, but not in the Dodge Avenger.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Benson Police Department, the Benson Fire Department, and CentraCare Ambulance. Officials are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We extend our best wishes to Ms. Sinurat-Backman and hope for her full recovery.
Intersection Collisions in Minnesota
Intersections like the one at Highways 9 and 29 in Benson are frequent sites of traffic collisions, especially when drivers are navigating cross-traffic without protected turn signals. While rural highways often offer clear visibility, factors like speed, timing, and misjudged gaps can lead to serious outcomes even on dry roads.
The crash serves as an important reminder of how quickly routine travel can turn dangerous at rural intersections. Thankfully, seat belts and airbag deployment helped reduce the severity of injuries in this case, but any crash that sends a person to the hospital highlights the need for increased attention to traffic control and driver awareness.
Injury crashes often bring more than just physical pain; they create stress, expenses, and logistical challenges. Victims may find themselves navigating hospital visits, transportation issues, and time away from work, even with non-life-threatening injuries.
