Why Single-Vehicle Crashes Into Fixed Objects Can Be Severe
Crashes involving vehicles leaving the roadway and striking fixed objects like trees or utility poles often result in serious injuries due to the sudden force of impact. Unlike collisions between two moving vehicles, there is no second object to absorb or reduce the force of the crash.
Road design, speed, driver distraction, fatigue, or sudden mechanical issues can all contribute to a vehicle leaving its lane. In residential areas, curves and limited lighting may also increase the risk of roadway departure accidents.
Utility poles and trees are common roadside hazards because they do not move upon impact, which can lead to severe vehicle damage. After such crashes, investigators typically analyze roadway conditions, vehicle data, and physical evidence at the scene to help determine what caused the vehicle to veer off the road.
