How Vehicles Leaving the Roadway Can Endanger Pedestrians
Pedestrians walking near roads can still face danger when a vehicle leaves its lane or exits the roadway unexpectedly. These crashes might involve sidewalks, utility poles, signs, trees, or other roadside objects before striking people nearby.
Loss of vehicle control can happen for many reasons, including sudden steering movements, distractions, weather conditions, or mechanical problems. Even when speed or impairment is not a factor, a vehicle traveling off the roadway can still cause serious injuries because pedestrians have little protection from impact.
Sidewalk crashes can also create additional hazards due to debris from damaged signs, landscaping, or vehicle parts. After these incidents, investigators often examine roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and witness accounts to help determine how the crash unfolded.
