What Can Contribute to Severe Crashes at Rural Intersections?
Crashes at rural intersections can be especially serious due to limited lighting, higher travel speeds, and reduced visibility. Large commercial vehicles may also require more distance and time to maneuver safely through crossing points.
When one vehicle is turning or backing through an intersection, the risk of conflict increases if approaching drivers are unable to react in time. Investigators often review vehicle movements, sightlines, and roadway design to determine how a collision occurred. Skid marks, impact points, and traffic patterns can also help reconstruct events in crashes involving large trucks and commercial vehicles.
