Kershaw County, SC (July 6, 2026) – Multiple people were injured after a boat crash on Lake Wateree on Saturday, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on July 4 in the Wateree Creek area of Lake Wateree, where the Kershaw County Fire Service assisted Fairfield County fire crews in the emergency response.

Officials said one of the boats involved sank following the collision. Multiple injured occupants were brought to awaiting EMS personnel by Kershaw County rescue crews and officers with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).

Authorities have not released the number of people injured or the extent of their injuries. Officials also have not disclosed what caused the collision.

Following the response, the Kershaw County Fire Service thanked the agencies involved in the rescue effort and reminded boaters to always wear life jackets, maintain a proper lookout, and operate their vessels safely. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating the crash.

We wish all those injured a full and speedy recovery.

How Are Boat Collisions Investigated?

Boating accidents involving injuries are investigated to determine the circumstances that led to the collision and to improve waterway safety. Investigators examine the condition of the vessels, damage patterns, weather and water conditions, and the location where the crash occurred.

Authorities also interview operators and witnesses, review navigation practices, and inspect required safety equipment, including life jackets and onboard emergency gear. When a vessel sinks, investigators may recover and examine it to determine whether mechanical issues or other factors contributed to the incident.

By combining physical evidence with witness statements and environmental conditions, investigators work to establish an accurate timeline of the crash and identify any contributing factors.
