Cape Girardeau, MO (March 10, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 55 on Saturday morning claimed the life of an Arkansas woman near Center Junction in Cape Girardeau County.
The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. on March 7 at mile marker 99.8. Reports indicate that a southbound SUV rear-ended a semi-truck pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with construction equipment. The semi had been stopped due to a previous crash near mile marker 97, which was blocking southbound traffic.
The passenger in the SUV, 87-year-old Sandra Scherm of Stuttgart, Arkansas, was not wearing a seat belt and died from her injuries. The SUV’s driver, 64-year-old Amy Berg, also of Stuttgart, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The semi driver, 29-year-old Nuraly Alisherov of Schaumburg, reported no injuries. Traffic in the area was temporarily detoured while emergency crews responded and cleared the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our condolences go out to the family of Sandra Scherm .
Why Rear-End Crashes with Stopped Trucks Are Particularly Deadly
Rear-end collisions involving stopped or slow-moving trucks can be especially dangerous due to the size difference between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. Vehicles striking the rear of a truck often experience severe impact, especially if occupants are unrestrained.
Seat belts significantly reduce the risk of fatal injuries, but not wearing one can result in occupants being thrown forward or ejected during a collision. Heavy trailers and equipment can also amplify the force of impact when vehicles collide at highway speeds.
Highway traffic conditions, sudden stops, and reduced visibility can all increase the likelihood of rear-end crashes. Drivers approaching stopped traffic must remain alert and maintain safe following distances to reduce the risk of collisions.
