Charlotte, NC (April 2, 2026) – An 8-year-old girl lost her life after a crash involving a car while riding her bicycle in a neighborhood over the weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday, March 28, along Monmouth Drive, where Nyomi Summers was riding with friends. According to people nearby, a 2006 Chrysler 300 struck the child as several other kids moved out of the way.
Emergency units arrived and found the girl in the roadway along with her damaged bicycle. The driver, identified as Khaliyal Burney, remained at the scene along with a passenger.
Authorities reported that speed and impairment were not believed to be factors in the crash. Burney was later taken into custody and charged with driving while license revoked, no liability insurance, failure to register, and fictitious registration.
Residents in the area said concerns about vehicles speeding through the neighborhood streets had been raised before.
