Chicago, IL (May 16, 2026) – A 37-year-old man was critically injured on Friday morning in a hit-and-run crash involving a semi-truck on the Southwest Side of Chicago.
Chicago police said the crash happened around 6:50 a.m. on May 15, in the 6400 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Marquette Park area. Investigators said the man was riding a bicycle northbound and attempting to turn left when a southbound semi-truck struck him. The driver did not stop after the collision and left the scene.
Emergency units responded and transported the cyclist to Christ Hospital, where he was treated for a head injury and listed in critical condition.
No other injuries were reported in the crash. The police said the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, and limited information about the suspect’s semi-truck has been released. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the incident.

What Factors Are Often Examined in Bicycle–Truck Hit-and-Run Crashes?
Crashes involving bicycles and large commercial vehicles often require investigators to carefully reconstruct vehicle paths and cyclist movement. Because bicycles are smaller and less visible, investigators frequently focus on sightlines, turning movements, and traffic timing.
In hit-and-run cases, early investigation efforts often rely on surveillance footage, witness statements, and roadway debris to identify the fleeing vehicle. Damage patterns and tire marks may help determine the direction and speed of the truck involved. Medical reports are also reviewed to assess injury severity and understand the force of impact. In urban areas, traffic congestion and intersection design can also play a role in how quickly a driver is able to detect and react to cyclists.
