West Manchester Township, PA (May 16, 2026) – A residential fire displaced dozens of residents and caused multiple injuries in the 800 block of Stoverstown Road in West Manchester Township.

Fire crews responded to the scene at about 10:28 a.m. on Friday, May 15, after flames were reported coming from a duplex structure. Officials said the fire began in a middle unit before spreading rapidly to two additional attached homes.

The police confirmed that 23 people were displaced as the fire spread through the connected buildings. Three individuals suffered injuries, mostly related to smoke inhalation and burns. One additional person was treated for a sprained ankle sustained during the evacuation. All residents were able to escape the structure.

Officials also reported that several pets did not survive the fire. Firefighters noted that the construction style of the duplex contributed to the speed at which flames traveled through the structure.

Emergency units remained on scene for an extended period to control hotspots and prevent further spread to nearby homes. Residents were assisted in leaving the area as crews worked to secure the block. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.

Our thoughts are with all those affected as they recover from this incident.

How Duplex and Multi-Unit Structure Fires Can Spread Quickly

Fires in duplexes and connected residential buildings can spread rapidly because shared walls and attic spaces often allow flames to move between units. In some older construction types, open framing can create pathways that allow fire and smoke to travel vertically and horizontally with little resistance.

Once a fire enters shared structural spaces, it can grow quickly before residents are fully aware of the danger. Smoke inhalation becomes a major risk, especially when hallways and stairwells fill with smoke. Emergency responders often focus on both extinguishing active flames and preventing fire from reaching additional units. Evacuation speed is critical in these situations, as conditions can change within minutes. Structural design, building materials, and ventilation patterns all play a role in how quickly a residential fire spreads through connected homes.
