What Investigators Often Review in Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crashes
After fatal hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians, investigators typically focus on identifying the vehicle involved and determining the exact sequence of events before impact. Roadway lighting, pedestrian location, and vehicle travel direction are often examined during the investigation.
Surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras may help investigators trace the vehicle’s path after leaving the scene. Debris, paint transfer, and vehicle fragments can also provide clues about the make and model of the vehicle involved.
In urban areas, traffic volume and nighttime visibility can affect how quickly drivers and pedestrians see one another. Investigators use these details to reconstruct the crash and understand how the collision occurred.
