Clay Co., IA (April 3, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash in rural Spencer left one person injured on Wednesday morning, April 1, in Clay County.

The crash occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. in the 2000 block of 360th Street. Authorities reported that a Nissan Rogue attempted to pass a slowing sanitation truck at the same time the truck was preparing to make a left turn.

Investigators said the truck, a Freightliner, had signaled before turning. The Nissan struck the rear portion of the truck during the maneuver.

Both drivers were not hurt in the crash. However, a passenger in the Nissan suffered injuries and was taken from the scene by a private vehicle.

No additional vehicles were involved in the incident. The crash remains under investigation.

We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in the crash.

What Risks Are Involved When Passing Near Turning Vehicles?

Routes connecting rural areas near 360th Street can experience sudden slowdowns from working vehicles. When crashes occur in Clay County, responders often focus on managing traffic and securing the scene.

Passing another vehicle requires clear visibility and awareness of signals. If a driver attempts to pass while the lead vehicle is turning, it can create a conflict in the same lane space.

Large vehicles, such as sanitation trucks, may slow before turning and rely on signals to alert others. Missing or misjudging these signals can increase the chance of a collision, especially on rural roads with fewer lane controls.
