Corona, CA (April 20, 2026) – A deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver occurred early on Sunday morning, April 19, on the Riverside Freeway in Corona. The collision happened around 5:35 a.m. on the westbound side near the Green River Road off-ramp.
Authorities reported that a vehicle, believed to be a black Ford pickup truck, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The wrong-way movement led to a crash involving at least five other vehicles, including a big rig. Abel Quintero, a 25-year-old man from Lake Elsinore, was identified as the person who died in the incident.
The driver of the big rig was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. All westbound lanes were shut down shortly after the crash, and traffic remained blocked for about two hours while crews worked at the scene. Additional details about other drivers or vehicles involved have not been released.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Why Wrong-Way Freeway Crashes Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Wrong-way crashes on freeways tend to be more dangerous than other types of collisions because vehicles are often traveling at high speeds in opposite directions. This increases the force of impact and reduces the time drivers have to react or avoid a crash.
These incidents can involve multiple vehicles, especially on busy routes where traffic is steady. A single wrong-way driver can quickly create a chain reaction, affecting several lanes and leading to widespread damage and injuries.
Roadway design and signage are meant to prevent wrong-way entry, but confusion, impaired driving, or poor visibility can still lead to these events. When they occur, lane closures and traffic delays are common as crews work to clear the scene and restore normal flow.
