Deer Lake Unorg, MN (January 5, 2026) – A crash involving two vehicles and resulting in injuries was reported on Monday morning at the intersection of Highway 2 and County Road 11 in Deer Lake Unorganized Township, Itasca County. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m., prompting a response from Cohasset Fire and the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 was traveling northbound on County Road 11 when it failed to yield at the stop sign at Highway 2. The pickup proceeded through the intersection and was struck by an eastbound 2009 Chevy Impala on Highway 2. The crash caused injuries to a passenger in the Impala.
Medics transported 75-year-old Bonita Marie Nienaber, a passenger in the Chevy Impala, to Deer River Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers, 44-year-old Billyjo William Huf and 51-year-old Heather Kay Berghorst, residents of Deer River, were also evaluated at Deer River Hospital but reported no injuries. All parties were wearing seat belts, and no alcohol was involved in the incident.
The crash remains under investigation by local authorities. Our thoughts are with those injured in this collision, particularly Ms. Nienaber, as she recovers.
Intersection Collisions in Minnesota
Crashes at rural intersections like Highway 2 and CR 11 are a common source of injury on Minnesota’s roadways. Failure to yield at stop signs remains one of the leading causes of these collisions, especially when drivers misjudge oncoming traffic or road conditions. Monday’s incident in Itasca County highlights how a momentary oversight at a stop sign can lead to serious consequences.
In rural areas, long sightlines and open roads can give drivers a false sense of security, contributing to risky decisions such as failing to stop or yield. When a collision occurs between vehicles of differing sizes, such as a pickup truck and a passenger car, the force of impact can be significant and often results in passenger injuries, even if airbags deploy and seat belts are used properly.
Fortunately, in this crash, the reported injuries were not life-threatening, and first responders from Cohasset Fire and local law enforcement were able to provide timely assistance. Still, any injury in a crash can lead to physical, emotional, and financial challenges for victims, especially seniors, who may require more time and support to recover.
Minnesota drivers are urged to approach intersections with heightened caution, even in familiar rural areas. Reducing speed, coming to a complete stop, and thoroughly checking for cross traffic are essential safety practices that help prevent crashes like this one.
If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash at an intersection, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly, retain all records, and stay updated as investigations proceed.
