House Fires Can Spread Quickly Through Upper Floors of Homes
Fires that begin or spread to upper levels of a home can become dangerous within minutes because heat and smoke naturally rise through stairways and hallways. Thick smoke may quickly fill living spaces, making it difficult for occupants and pets to escape safely.
Smoke inhalation is one of the most common dangers during residential fires and can seriously affect both people and animals even when burns are limited. Pets inside the home may become trapped by smoke or blocked exits during rapidly changing fire conditions.
Emergency responders often focus on rescue operations first before working to fully contain the fire. Investigators later examine burn patterns, electrical systems, and other conditions inside the home to help determine how the fire started and spread.
