Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Often Result in Severe Injuries
Pedestrian crashes on interstate highways are often extremely serious because vehicles travel at much higher speeds than on local roads. Drivers may also have very limited time to react when a person is in or near travel lanes, especially during overnight hours.
Dark lighting conditions and highway merging areas can further reduce visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. Even a single impact at interstate speeds may result in life-threatening or fatal injuries.
After fatal highway crashes, investigators commonly review roadway evidence, vehicle positioning, and visibility conditions to better understand how the collision occurred. Lane closures are also common while crews provide emergency care and reconstruct the crash scene.
