What Can Lead to Serious Crashes on US Highways Near Bridges
Highways near river bridges, such as US-378 by the Pee Dee River, often see steady traffic throughout the day. Bridges can create tighter lanes and limited shoulder space, which leaves less room for drivers to recover from sudden mistakes.
Speed and visibility can also affect how crashes unfold. Vehicles traveling in opposite directions at highway speeds have little time to react if one crosses into another lane. Even a brief lapse in attention can lead to a head-on or side-impact collision.
Bridges may also change road elevation slightly, which can affect sight lines. When traffic is moderate to heavy, drivers must stay alert and maintain safe following distances. Crashes in these areas often result in serious injuries due to the force involved at highway speeds.
