Crash Scenes Involving Fire and Vehicle Overturns
Crashes involving fire can create added danger for people inside vehicles and for crews working nearby. Heat, smoke, leaking fluids, and damaged electrical systems can make the scene harder to control. Fuel tanks, battery systems in hybrid and electric vehicles, and pressurized lines can all become hazards if exposed to flame or extreme heat, sometimes requiring firefighters to manage the blaze before any rescue attempt can safely begin.
Overturned vehicles can also complicate rescue work. Doors may be blocked, windows may break, and injured people may be difficult to reach. In some cases, crews must remove parts of the vehicle before a person can be safely freed. Hydraulic rescue tools are commonly used to cut through door frames and roof sections, and the process can take considerably longer when a vehicle is resting on its side or roof. The position of the vehicle also affects how fluids drain and where fire may spread.
Vegetation fires can spread quickly near roadways, especially if dry grass or brush is close to the crash scene. Even a small fire may require fast attention so it does not reach other vehicles, nearby property, or responding crews.
