Why Turning Movements at Intersections Can Lead to Crashes
Crashes often occur when one vehicle attempts to turn across oncoming traffic at an intersection. Drivers making left turns must judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles, which can be difficult in real time.
Even in clear weather, small timing errors can result in a collision. Vehicles traveling straight typically have the right of way, while turning drivers must wait for a safe gap before proceeding.
Traffic flow, visibility, and road layout all influence how these situations develop. Intersections where highways meet can see faster-moving traffic, which may reduce the margin for error when drivers decide to turn.
