Passing Maneuvers on Highways Can Increase Crash Risk
Passing another vehicle on a two-lane highway requires careful timing and clear visibility. When a driver moves into the opposite lane, they must ensure there is enough space to complete the maneuver safely before oncoming traffic approaches.
Misjudging distance or speed can lead to a head-on crash. These collisions are often severe because both vehicles are moving toward each other, increasing the force of impact.
Road conditions and traffic flow can also affect passing decisions. Curves, hills, or limited sight distance may reduce a driver’s ability to see oncoming vehicles. These factors make safe passing more difficult, especially on busy or rural highways.
