Pedestrian Injury Risks at Busy Intersections
Pedestrian crashes at intersections can lead to serious injuries because people have little protection from impact. Even at lower speeds, a vehicle can cause major harm. Turning traffic can also create added danger where vehicles and people cross the same space.
Visibility may be a key factor in these crashes. Vehicle size, road width, traffic signals, crosswalk placement, and nearby lanes may affect what drivers and pedestrians can see. A short delay in reaction time can increase the risk of injury.
After a pedestrian is hit, medical care often focuses on head, chest, leg, and internal injuries. Hospital records can help show how severe the injuries can be. Scene details, vehicle damage, and roadway markings may also provide useful context after the crash.
