Why Ejection and Entrapment Increase Injury Severity in Crashes
Crashes involving ejection or entrapment often lead to severe injuries. When a person is thrown from a vehicle, they may experience multiple impacts with the roadway or nearby objects. Seat belt use greatly reduces the risk of ejection during a collision.
Entrapment happens when vehicle damage traps someone inside. In these situations, emergency crews use specialized tools to remove doors or cut through metal to reach the injured person safely.
High-speed impacts, intersection crashes, and side collisions can increase the force transferred to occupants. Vehicle design features such as airbags and reinforced frames help reduce harm, but serious injuries can still occur when crash forces are significant.
