Hanover County, VA (March 26, 2026) – A Maryland woman was killed following a three-vehicle crash early on Thursday morning, March 26, on Interstate 95 North in Hanover County.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred around 4:25 a.m. near mile marker 97, just before the Doswell exit. The collision involved a Lexus SUV and two tractor-trailers.
Investigators said the SUV made a sudden and drastic maneuver into the center lane, prompting one of the tractor-trailers behind it to attempt to avoid a collision by merging into the left lane. Authorities said the SUV then struck the truck, pushing it into a second tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane.
The impact caused the two tractor-trailers to collide, with one jackknifing. Both trucks subsequently caught fire, though the flames were quickly extinguished.
The SUV left the roadway and struck two trees. The driver, identified as 56-year-old Stella Ogechi Amadi of Windsor Mill, Maryland, was transported to VCU Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. Officials confirmed she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Neither tractor-trailer driver reported injuries.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions, with backups stretching approximately seven miles. Multiple lanes were blocked for about 90 minutes before reopening later in the morning.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more information will be released as it becomes available. Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.
What Happens When Multi-Vehicle Crashes Involve Large Trucks
Crashes involving multiple vehicles and large trucks can quickly become complex due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles.
Sudden maneuvers or attempts to avoid collisions can trigger chain-reaction impacts, increasing the risk of additional damage and hazards, such as fires.
Investigators often examine lane changes, vehicle spacing, and driver reactions to determine how these crashes unfold.
