What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety at Intersections?
Intersections are common areas where pedestrian accidents happen, especially during evening hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers may have a harder time seeing people crossing, particularly in areas without strong lighting or clear markings.
Traffic speed also affects how serious a crash can become. Even at moderate speeds, a person on foot is at high risk of severe harm if hit by a vehicle. Road design, including the presence of crosswalks and signals, can influence how safely pedestrians can move through an area.
Distractions are another concern for both drivers and pedestrians. Looking away from the road or surroundings, even briefly, can lead to dangerous situations. Staying alert and using designated crossing points may help reduce the risk of these types of incidents.
