How Blizzards Increase Travel Risks Across Massachusetts
Blizzard conditions can create dangerous road conditions in a matter of hours. Heavy snowfall, strong winds, and freezing temperatures reduce visibility and make the pavement slick. Vehicles can easily lose traction, leading to spinouts, crashes, or breakdowns.
Snow buildup can also create hazards outside of moving traffic. Clearing snow from vehicles or standing near roadways during a storm can place people at risk from passing traffic or slippery surfaces. Icy conditions may cause drivers to lose control unexpectedly.
Drivers can reduce risk during winter storms by slowing and leaving extra space between vehicles. Keeping emergency supplies in the car and staying updated on weather conditions can also help improve safety during severe winter weather.
