What Factors Can Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Pedestrian Crashes at Night

Incidents where a pedestrian is struck by more than one vehicle often happen in low-visibility conditions. Darkness can make it difficult for drivers to notice someone in the roadway, especially if the person is wearing dark clothing.

Positioning also matters. If a person is lying or sitting on the road, drivers may not recognize them in time to stop. Reaction time becomes shorter, particularly at higher speeds or on roads without street lighting.

Traffic flow can add to the risk. When multiple vehicles are traveling in the same direction, one driver’s actions may not leave enough time for others to respond. These situations can quickly lead to serious outcomes, especially during overnight hours.
