What Factors Are Often Reviewed in Pedestrian Crashes Outside Crosswalks?
Pedestrian crashes outside marked crosswalks are often reviewed by examining visibility and traffic flow at the time of the incident. Road lighting conditions can affect how clearly a driver sees someone crossing the roadway, especially at night.
Vehicle speed is also assessed, since higher speeds reduce the time available to react to unexpected movement in the road. Even brief delays in braking can lead to serious outcomes in busy corridors.
Investigators may also look at roadway layout, including lane width, signage, and nearby intersections. These details help establish how both the pedestrian and driver were positioned before the collision occurred.
