Why Pedestrian Incidents on Highways Are Especially Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes on highways often result in severe outcomes due to high vehicle speeds and limited stopping distance. Drivers may have little time to react when a person is present on the roadway, especially in areas not designed for foot traffic.
Highways typically lack sidewalks and safe crossing points, making them hazardous for pedestrians. When someone is on the roadway, visibility and reaction time become critical factors that can influence the outcome.
Large vehicles like semi-trucks require longer distances to slow down or stop. This makes it harder to avoid a collision, particularly when the pedestrian is in a travel lane.
