Why Nighttime Bicycle Crashes Often Result in Serious Injuries
Bicycle crashes at night can be more dangerous due to reduced visibility for both drivers and riders. When lighting is limited, it becomes harder for motorists to see cyclists entering roadways or intersections in time to react safely.
Investigators often review lighting conditions, road layout, and visibility at the time of the crash. Driver reaction time and cyclist positioning are also considered when determining how the collision occurred. In many cases, even low-speed impacts can cause serious injuries because bicyclists have little physical protection compared to occupants inside vehicles.
