Why Late-Night Loss-of-Control Crashes Can Be Severe
Crashes involving vehicles leaving the roadway often occur when drivers lose control due to speed, distraction, or impairment. Once a vehicle leaves the main roadway, obstacles such as curbs, poles, and landscaping can increase the severity of impact.
Parking lots and roadside areas may contain fixed objects that amplify damage when struck at speed. Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and driver actions leading up to the crash to determine what caused the loss of control. In multi-occupant crashes, passenger positioning and seatbelt use are also reviewed during the investigation.
