Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Cause Traffic Delays on Interstate Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes on interstate highways can quickly create traffic backups, especially during busy travel hours. Even a collision involving a few vehicles may block lanes or reduce traffic flow while emergency crews work in the area.
Highway crashes often involve chain-reaction impacts because vehicles travel at higher speeds and drivers have less time to react. Wet pavement, sudden braking, and limited visibility can also increase the risk of additional collisions after the first impact.
After a crash, responders usually focus on checking for injuries, clearing damaged vehicles, and reopening lanes safely. Traffic patterns near mile markers and merge areas are also commonly reviewed because these locations can become congested when drivers suddenly slow down.
