Limestone County, TX (April 28, 2026) – One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on US 84 east of Mexia.
The crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27, while traffic was moving along the highway. Emergency units responded to the scene after reports of a serious collision involving multiple vehicles.
Investigators said a 2009 Volkswagen Beetle, driven by 92-year-old Buddie Marce Thompson of Mexia, was traveling westbound and had stopped in the main lane while preparing to make a left turn. A 2018 Toyota SUV, also westbound, struck the rear of the Volkswagen after failing to control its speed.
The impact pushed the Volkswagen into the eastbound lanes, where it was then struck by an oncoming truck-tractor semi-trailer. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the next of kin has been notified.
The driver of the Toyota has not been identified, and it is unclear whether charges will be filed. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
How Do Chain-Reaction Crashes Happen on High-Speed Highways?
Chain-reaction crashes often begin with a single impact that triggers additional collisions involving other vehicles. On highways, traffic moves at higher speeds, which can reduce the time drivers have to react.
When one vehicle stops or slows suddenly, following drivers may not be able to brake in time. This can lead to rear-end impacts that push vehicles into other lanes of traffic.
The risk increases further when vehicles are forced into oncoming lanes or opposing traffic flow. In these situations, drivers may have little space or time to avoid additional collisions, especially on roads with steady traffic in both directions.
