How Alcohol Impairment Can Affect Driving Performance
Alcohol can affect several abilities that drivers rely on to operate a vehicle safely. Reaction time, coordination, and decision-making may all be reduced after drinking.
When reaction time slows, drivers may take longer to brake or steer away from hazards. Even a short delay can increase the chance of a crash at intersections or during sudden traffic changes.
Alcohol may also affect depth perception and distance judgment. This can make it harder to estimate how fast another vehicle is approaching or how much space is needed to turn or merge.
Impairment can also lead to reduced attention to traffic signals and other drivers. When awareness drops, the risk of mistakes increases, particularly in busy roadway areas where quick decisions are often required.
