Madison, WI (May 3, 2026) – A construction worker has died after being struck in a hit-and-run crash late Thursday night in Madison, with police confirming the suspect has since been arrested.
According to the Madison Police Department, the incident occurred just after 10:00 p.m. near the intersection of South Stoughton Road and Buckeye Road. Authorities say a 23-year-old construction worker was placing traffic cones when he was hit by a van.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision, heading southbound. Emergency responders arrived and transported the worker to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Following an investigation, officers used traffic camera footage to identify and locate the suspect vehicle in a neighborhood on the city’s south side. Police arrested Michael Nathan-Lawrence Martin, who is now facing a charge of hit-and-run involving death. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The Madison Police Department is working alongside the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine all circumstances surrounding the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and coworkers.
Why Are Construction Zones Especially Dangerous for Workers?
Construction zones present unique risks for workers, especially when they are close to active roadways. Even with cones, signage, and traffic control measures in place, workers remain vulnerable to passing vehicles.
Drivers may be distracted, speeding, or unaware of sudden lane changes, increasing the risk of collisions. Nighttime conditions can make visibility even more challenging, further raising the danger for those working on the road.
Hit-and-run incidents add another layer of concern, as immediate assistance may be delayed and accountability becomes more complex. This is why many areas enforce strict penalties for leaving the scene of a crash.
Staying alert, reducing speed in work zones, and following posted signs are essential steps drivers can take to protect roadway workers and prevent tragic incidents like this one.
