Walnut Creek, CA (May 3, 2026) – A deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 680 near Walnut Creek left one person dead and multiple others injured late Friday night in Contra Costa County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers received reports around 11:20 p.m. of a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-680 just north of Highway 242. Within minutes, responding units encountered a major multi-vehicle crash near Treat Boulevard.
Authorities say the wrong-way driver, operating a Dodge Charger, collided with multiple vehicles, resulting in a chaotic and severe crash scene. A passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.
In total, seven others were injured. Four individuals, including the wrong-way driver, sustained major injuries, while three others suffered minor injuries. One person involved in the crash was reported uninjured.
Emergency crews transported several victims to local hospitals for treatment. Investigators later determined that the wrong-way driver was impaired at the time of the crash. She was arrested and remains hospitalized.
The crash led to the closure of all northbound lanes of I-680 for several hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
