Hughson, CA (May 3, 2026) – Four people were injured Saturday morning following a head-on collision on Hatch Road east of Clinton Road in the Hughson area of Stanislaus County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. and involved a white 2017 Hyundai sedan and a white 2021 Mercedes AMG SUV. Responding officers found both vehicles on the south shoulder of the roadway with significant damage.
Preliminary findings indicate the Hyundai was traveling westbound in the left-turn lane while attempting to pass another vehicle. During the maneuver, the driver turned left into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the oncoming Mercedes, which was traveling about 55 mph. The vehicles then collided head-on.
The Hyundai driver, 22-year-old Jonathan Alejandro Robles Sanchez of Hickman, sustained major injuries. His two passengers, 25-year-old Angel Flores and 24-year-old Ciarra Bowerman, also suffered major injuries. Authorities noted that Bowerman was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
The driver of the Mercedes, 55-year-old Sukhjinder Singh Sanghera of Hughson, sustained injuries.
All four individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Officials stated that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been factors in the collision.
The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
How Do Unsafe Passing Maneuvers Lead to Serious Crashes?
Unsafe passing is a common cause of serious traffic collisions, especially on two-lane roads where vehicles travel in opposite directions at high speeds. When a driver attempts to pass without sufficient visibility or uses lanes not intended for through traffic, the risk of a head-on collision increases significantly.
Turning movements can further complicate the situation. If a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic while attempting to turn or merge, the result can be a direct-impact crash with severe consequences.
Seatbelt use also plays a critical role in injury outcomes. Passengers who are not properly restrained are at a much higher risk of being ejected from the vehicle, which can lead to life-threatening injuries.
Understanding these risks highlights the importance of following traffic laws, using designated passing zones, and always wearing seatbelts to reduce the severity of crashes.
