St. Ignace, MI (July 9, 2026) – Emergency crews were dispatched following reports that a 69-year-old St. Ignace man suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on US-2 near Boulevard Drive on Tuesday, July 7. The accident reportedly left a truck engulfed in flames after it crashed into a nearby car wash.

EMS and Fire responded to the scene and found an SUV with significant front-end damage and a truck that had crashed into the car wash. Shortly after the collision, the truck caught fire inside the building. Fire crews extinguished the flames and helped free the truck driver, who was taken to Mackinac Straits Health System with serious injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, the truck was attempting to turn onto US-2 from a gas station when it failed to stop for an approaching SUV. The occupants of the SUV suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital for treatment. Officials continue to look into the crash and will provide more information once it becomes available.

We are keeping the injured in our thoughts and hoping for their recovery.

Why Turning Crashes at Highway Entrances Can Be Severe

Crashes involving vehicles entering a highway from a business or side road can cause significant damage due to the speed difference between approaching traffic and turning vehicles. Drivers entering a highway are expected to yield to oncoming traffic before completing their turn.

Investigators may examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, sight distance, and physical evidence to determine how the collision occurred. They can also review witness statements, surveillance footage, and damage patterns to establish the sequence of events. These findings help provide a clearer understanding of the crash and the factors that contributed to it.
