Marion, OH (March 21, 2026) – One person was killed, and several others were hurt in a crash on Friday afternoon, March 20, at the intersection of Route 309 and Route 37 in Marion County.
Early findings show a car carrying two people failed to stop at a posted sign just before 4 p.m. The vehicle then entered the intersection and was struck by an SUV carrying four occupants, including two minors. The impact pushed both vehicles off the roadway and sent the car into several road signs and a concrete post.
The driver of the car was flown to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The passenger, identified as 65-year-old Cresencio Valdez of Marion, was pronounced dead at the scene. All four people in the SUV were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Authorities have not released additional details about their conditions.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Stop Sign Violations Can Lead to Serious Intersection Crashes
Crashes at intersections often happen when drivers fail to yield or ignore posted signs. Stop signs are placed to control traffic flow and reduce the risk of vehicles crossing paths at the same time. When a driver does not stop, it can lead to a side-impact crash, which is often more dangerous than other types of collisions.
These crashes can involve multiple vehicles and may cause cars to leave the roadway due to the force of impact. Passengers on the side of the vehicle that is struck may face a higher risk of serious harm. Factors such as speed, visibility, and road design can also affect how severe the crash becomes. Following traffic signs and slowing at intersections can help reduce these risks.
