Emergency units responded after a 2010 Hyundai Elantra traveling north attempted to make a U-turn. At the same time, a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle was heading south. The car turned into the motorcycle’s path, causing the motorcycle to strike the passenger side of the vehicle.
The motorcyclist, identified as Paris Harris, 47, of Avondale, was thrown from the motorcycle during the impact. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why U-Turn Crashes Involving Motorcycles Are Often Severe
Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than larger vehicles. When a driver makes a U-turn, it can be harder to judge the distance and speed of an approaching motorcycle. This increases the chance of a serious collision.
Motorcyclists have less protection than people inside passenger vehicles. Even when wearing helmets and protective gear, riders are more exposed during a crash. Being thrown from the motorcycle can lead to severe or fatal injuries.
Drivers can help reduce risk by checking carefully before turning or making a U-turn. Motorcyclists can also improve safety by staying visible and maintaining safe speeds. Awareness from both drivers and riders can help prevent crashes at intersections.
