Marshall County, IN (February 23, 2026) – An unlicensed driver was arrested on Monday, February 23, during the morning after striking a marked police cruiser in Marshall County. The crash happened near U.S. 31 and 13th Road, close to the U.S. 30 interchange.
According to authorities, Deputy Matthew Brown was working a separate crash on U.S. 31 when his fully marked patrol vehicle was parked near the inside shoulder. A northbound vehicle lost control and sideswiped the left side of the cruiser while the deputy was inside.
Officials identified the driver as 30-year-old Carlos Alexis Flores Hernandez of Peru. Both vehicles sustained severe damage. The deputy was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and later released.
Authorities said lake effect snow was falling at the time, creating slick road conditions. Flores Hernandez was arrested for driving without a license.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Winter Road Conditions Can Increase Crash Risks
Snow and ice can quickly make highways dangerous, especially during lake effect snow events. Slick pavement reduces tire traction and increases stopping distances, making it harder for drivers to maintain control.
When emergency vehicles are stopped along the roadway, they can be at added risk. Drivers may have less time to react if they encounter snow-covered lanes or limited visibility.
Even at moderate speeds, a loss of traction can cause a vehicle to slide into nearby lanes or shoulders. Reducing speed and allowing extra space between vehicles can help lower the chance of collisions during winter weather.
