Why Lane Departures Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Lane departures are a common factor in serious roadway incidents. They can happen when a driver loses focus, experiences a medical issue, or misjudges the roadway. Even a brief moment outside the proper lane can put a vehicle directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
When a smaller vehicle collides with a larger one, such as a semi-truck, the difference in size and weight can increase the severity of injuries. These crashes often result in significant damage, especially when they occur at intersections or highway speeds.
Road markings, signage, and driver awareness all help reduce the chances of crossing into opposing lanes. Staying attentive and maintaining control of the vehicle are key ways to lower the risk of this type of crash.
