Left-Turn Collisions Are a Common Cause of Intersection Crashes in Pennsylvania
Left-turn collisions are among the most frequent types of crashes that occur at intersections. These incidents often happen when a driver attempts to cross oncoming traffic but misjudges the speed or distance of approaching vehicles.
Roadways such as Pennsylvania Route 405 frequently carry both local and through traffic, which can make turning movements more complex during early morning travel periods. Reduced lighting, limited visibility, or heavy commuter traffic can further increase the risk of collisions.
Transportation safety studies consistently show that intersection crashes account for a significant share of roadway injuries in the United States. Drivers making left turns must carefully gauge oncoming traffic and wait for a clear gap before proceeding, as even a brief miscalculation can result in a serious impact.
Investigators reviewing intersection crashes typically evaluate factors such as right-of-way, driver visibility, vehicle speeds, and roadway design to determine how the incident occurred.
