Why Pedestrian Crossings on Busy Roads Carry Higher Risks
Pedestrian crashes often occur on multi-lane roads where vehicles travel at steady speeds. Streets like Pelandale Ave can have consistent traffic flow, especially during evening hours when visibility begins to decrease.
When a person attempts to cross outside a marked crosswalk or in areas without traffic signals, drivers may not expect someone in the roadway. Even when drivers react quickly, stopping distance can be limited depending on speed and road conditions.
Areas near canals, trails, and residential neighborhoods can increase foot traffic along major streets. Improving lighting, using designated crossings, and remaining alert to surroundings can help reduce the likelihood of serious pedestrian accidents.
