What Riders and Drivers Should Know About Bus Crashes in Maryland
Crashes involving public transit buses in Maryland tend to attract immediate attention because they often carry multiple passengers at once. When a bus is struck or involved in a collision, even a lower-speed impact can result in injuries to several people, since bus riders are typically not wearing seatbelts. Morning rush-hour timing, like the early hour of this crash, means buses are often at or near full capacity.
Montgomery County’s Ride On system operates dozens of routes across a densely populated suburban area, sharing roads with heavy commercial vehicles, commuter traffic, and school buses. Intersections where major roads cross residential or commercial corridors see the highest volume of mixed traffic. Maryland law requires drivers to exercise caution around transit vehicles, particularly when buses are stopped or merging back into traffic after a stop.
