A man was riding his bicycle eastbound on FM 1485 when a 2013 Honda Civic, also heading east, struck him from behind. The bicycle had no lights or reflectors, and the surrounding stretch of FM 1485 has no street lighting. Emergency units responded, and CPR was started at the scene, but the cyclist was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Honda Civic showed no signs of impairment. FM 1485 was closed for several hours while the crash was reviewed, then reopened just before 3:00 a.m. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision, and more details will be shared as they become available. Our sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim.
Why Nighttime Bicycle Safety Is a Serious Concern on Texas Roads
Cycling at night on unlit rural roads carries significant risks, particularly when a bicycle lacks proper lighting or reflectors. Texas law requires cyclists riding after dark to have a white front light visible from at least 500 feet and a rear red reflector or light. Without these, drivers on dark two-lane roads have very little time to spot a cyclist ahead of them.
FM roads in Montgomery County often have no overhead lighting and carry vehicles moving at highway speeds. A bicycle blending into the darkness of an unlit roadway can be nearly impossible to see until it is too late. These conditions make proper bike lighting far more than a legal requirement — it is one of the most effective ways a cyclist can protect themselves after dark.
