How Helmet Use Can Affect Injury Severity in Motorcycle Crashes
Motorcycle crashes often lead to more serious injuries than other types of accidents because riders lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle. Helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries, which are among the most severe outcomes in these incidents.
When a crash occurs, the force of impact can throw a rider from the bike. Without head protection, the chances of trauma increase, especially during high-speed or head-on collisions. Helmets are designed to absorb some of that force and help protect the brain.
Other factors, such as road conditions, speed, and visibility, can also influence the severity of a crash. Even when one vehicle crosses the centre line, safety gear may affect the severity of injury for those involved.
