Why Shoulder Stops on Highways Can Be Dangerous
Stopping on a highway shoulder can expose drivers and passengers to fast-moving traffic. Even when vehicles are pulled off the road, nearby traffic continues at high speeds, leaving little room for error.
Exiting a vehicle in these conditions increases the risk of being struck, especially if visibility is limited or traffic is heavy. Passing vehicles, including large trucks, may not have enough time or space to react to someone near the roadway.
Remaining inside the vehicle when possible and moving as far from travel lanes as conditions allow can help reduce risk during roadside emergencies.
